A Gay Old Time! March 25, 2010 Kevin Tuel (CYPRESS, TX, US) After three successful seasons of campy club glitter and social satire, QAF explored more deeply in season 4 the darker aspects of human life. From heartbreaking separations to dramatic death, season 4 certainly gave the cast exquisite material to work with! Of course, all the shiney, sparkling, sexy fun is still very much a part of this groundbreaking series which is still to this day a pioneer of sexual freedom and boundary pushing television!
keeps gettin better... November 14, 2009 A Reader (Reno, NV) qaf keeps getting better. if you liked season three then season four is a must have!
No end of new stuff... July 17, 2009 R. Gawlitta (Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA) I absolutely love and appreciate "Queer as Folk" on so many levels. Not only is a (very) small segment of gay life examined, but it has characters that you really care about, who make decisions--good and bad--that all can relate to. Straight or gay. Straight shows are so prevalent and plentiful; yet, QAF confronts issues that haven't been touched by those others. Season 4 is quite a bit darker than the others, and way too short. After getting almost unnaturally involved with these people, it finally dawned on me that Brian is the heart and soul of this show, warts 'n all. His reflections and trials are proactive and sincere; pride be damned, he has the utmost integrity. Peter Paige as Emmett, originally a fringe character, has provided solid delight in his honesty, integrity and reliability. Sad and intense moments abound, and I was left with an intense desire to watch Season 5 for some resolutions. In my reviews of previous seasons, I failed to expand on the magnificent presence of the Lesbian couple, Melanie and Lindsey. They are ever-present and vital to the whole picture. Auxilliary characters are fine, such as Justin's militant buddy and Ted's savior counselor. Ted is still adorable in his naîveté and vulnerability. What amazes me the most is the consistancy of the characterizations, each an individual with a very individual agenda. I have Season 5, and I'll watch it thoughfully, as it's the last. I wish the DVDs had more info about the supporting characters. I liked so many, but I still don't know their names. Let's not forget Sharon Gless, that blast from the past that keeps a lot in perspective. Death, cancer, violence against gays, HIV, gay-parenting, and so much more is examined in Season 4. And love. True and not so true. Just like life.
