Product Description SWING KIDS
Amazon.com This strange movie with a niche subject--jazz-loving, dance-loving German kids persecuted by Hitler's men--almost works, thanks to a good cast who seem devoted to the unusual story line. Director Thomas Carter doesn't bring the necessary stylistic oomph to the musical sequences, something that might have pushed the whole production to another, more interesting level of Hollywood dream. Kenneth Branagh makes a particularly effective, wolf-in-sheep's-clothing Nazi official. --Tom Keogh

One of my favorite all time movies April 3, 2010 Ann Kirihara (Spokane, WA United States) I saw this movie when it first came out on the big screen and fell in love with it immediately. I love the story line - a bunch of swing kids listening to the forbidden jazz, and dancing in clubs to American music. The music and dancing is great, but the story is really sobering. It's hard to imagine what people lived through in those days. I bought this movie when it first came out on DVD and loaned it out. Big mistake!! Now I'm buying it again and I'll tell everyone where I got it so they can order their own. I also bought the soundtrack of the movie because the music is so addictive. Great movie. Great acting. Great music. A real hat trick!!

A very silly, preposterous film January 3, 2010 A. Grubshteyn (Mamaroneck, NY) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
Even though the dance numbers may be well choreographed and the time period is pretty realistically recreated, the idea of young people in 1940s Germany using swing music as a way to protest the politics of the time just seemed a little too far out and silly to me. Some of the dialogue here is just ridiculous (as are a lot of the set-ups of this movie). Even though it is well-intended and the messages here are clear, it just feels very odd and even unpleasant at times.
Seriously Strong Story Treated in a Lighter Way... December 24, 2009 Kenneth A. Nelson (Pensacola, FL) Not just another pre or active World War 2 epic.
Based on real stories, an entire sect of Kids who were entrenched in the music, clothing and social scene of the Jazz Swing Era. This was a lifestyle that wasn't approved of by Adolf Hitler and his Band of Merry Men.
We find life-long friends on opposing sides of the Swing Time Issues. We see hearts breaking on both sides of the dispute.
There are a great deal of facts about the Nazi Party's influence on young children and the older Kids. Directed by a softer hand, the facts come forward without nailing the viewer to a wall and force-feeding, hard-to-take associations between the Nazi Soldiers and the German civilians.
The film was thoroughly entertaining and informative too. Not a bruise to be found.
