Despite a typically haphazard plot, Highlander: Endgame is a marked improvement over previous sequels. This is the "torch-passing" chapter, in which the Immortal Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert) passes his life force to his heroic brother, Duncan (Adrian Paul, star of the 1993-96 Highlander TV series). These appealing stars make a fine onscreen duo, and Paul is a terrific choice to keep the franchise alive--strikingly handsome but possessing enough gravitas to make the prospect of future sequels unexpectedly promising. The movie is incoherent to the uninitiated, but established fans will be reasonably impressed by Endgame's cagey mix of romance, swordplay, and history-spanning action. While the movie's chaotic construction is regrettable, the frequent battles (including dazzling work by Honk Kong action star Donnie Yen) are adequately impressive, and Douglas Milsome--cinematographer of Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket--ensures that every scene is strikingly photographed. All in all, Highlander: Endgame is surprisingly worthwhile. --Jeff Shannon

This is a good Highlander Movie. The only problem is it is the same movie as Highlander 3-The source. Better definitions of movies in the movie description when they sre the sme as other movies would be very helpful.

I found a VHS copy of this movie in a box with several other movies while cleaning out the attic. It's one that I planned on upgrading to DVD but never bothered - for reasons which I was soon to be reminded. I won't go into excruciating detail, but there are plot holes everywhere and the movie keeps tripping up in the same ones over and over. The characters keep saying and doing things that are completely illogical, and they also seem to just show up for no other reason than because it's in the script.
Example: When Connor is in Scotland trying to make himself a new sword and Alex just shows up and says "I thought I'd find you here". Really? Wow, that's... dumb. Now I've never been to Scotland, but I'm pretty sure if my uncle Bob took off to Scotland and I needed to find him I'd probably either end up dead in some back alley or in jail before I found him simply because I'd wandered into the wrong sort of neighborhood or some other unfamiliar place - at any rate the absolute last place I'd think to look would be up on the side of a grassy mountain. Somehow she not only knows exactly where he is but also that he's going to need a special block of metal to make his sword with because evidently the metal in Scotland's just no good - he can't seem to get his sword right. There's a pile of bent up blades on the ground next to him. I'm no blacksmith, swordsmith or armorer, but if your piece isn't turning out just right is it really ruined? Couldn't you continue to work on the same piece of metal or is it too fargone just because it's bent? I hate to harp on something I know nothing about, but to me as a movie viewer this scene just looks stupid.
Then there's the acting. The villain as played by Mario Van Peebles is just not intimidating, mostly because he's just trying waaaaaaayyyy too hard. Also, we've already seen this character in Highlander 1; I can easily imagine the director sending Mario Van Peebles home with a copy of the first film and saying "Watch Clancy Brown, and just do what he does, only be like a gazzilion time scarier". I found myself laughing at him most of the time, the rest was spent thinking about how much better Clancy Brown was in the first Highlander movie. Directors take note - reminding your viewers of a better movie is a bad idea. And don't you hate it when the bad guy tells his lackeys to go find the good guy and then add "...and bring him to me... ALIVE!!!" only to have the thugs go and do the exact opposite and try to kill the good guy anyway? Didn't your boss just tell you NOT to kill him? He's already cut off your buddies head for no obvious reason, what do you think he's going to do to you when he finds out you disobeyed his orders? This brings up another point. Why send your henchmen to do a job that you could do yourself? What are you going to do while you wait? Make a ham sandwich? Make some cave paintings? Knit a sweater?
I liked Christopher Lambert in the first movie, but in this movie (as well as the horrendous 2nd film) he appears to be thinking he's in a much better movie than he actually is. But he's French, so I have to let him off the hook on that one.
I haven't seen Deborah Unger in many other movies - come to think of it I think this is the only one I've seen her in - but her voice in this movie is horribly overdubbed for some reason (is that really her voice?) and it just keeps me from buying into her character. But then again, she's only there to provide exposition and eye candy, one of which is an easy sell, the other - not so much.
Then there's Alex's Asian colleague - Imdb lists him as Takamura - This guy is really a mystery to me. I'm assuming he's meant to be Asian because he calls her "Alex-san" all the time and uses other asian movie character stereotype dialogue. Every once in a while he (or whoever is providing his obviously dubbed-in voice) is even able to effect an almost-but-not-quite believable Asian accent. But he doesn't really look Asian, so - who knows. Imdb lists the actor's name as Daniel Do. I tried to find more information on him, but Googling the name only resulted in some random unrelated stuff including porn. At this point I realized I really didn't care anymore. Anyway - his character just draws too much attention to himself, and not in the good kind of way, more like the that's really stupid kind of way.
The writing is awful, and the direction is uneven at best. There are more failed attempts at humor than the latest Adam Sandler movie. Things are done seemingly for no other reason than because it was really cool in the first movie. Example: the "scary car ride" scene where Kane is terrifying Connor's son by driving like a mad man - just like the Kurgan did with the old lady in the first movie. Watch it and tell me honestly that this scene was not lifted wholly and unashamedly from the first movie - the only difference being the scene in the first movie didn't suck. This movie keeps reminding me of the earlier and far superior film. Stop doing that - it's not helping.
I will say one thing in this movie's defense though - It does not suck as bad as the second one - but that's hardly praise. Anything after the second one (short of not making any more Highlander movies) would be a step up from that train wreck.
The filmmakers should have taken the tagline "There can be only one" to heart after the first one. Indeed, there should have been only one.

I bought this movie for $1.00 at a local flea market. I want my dollar back! This movie was very disappointing. I loved the first Highlander movie and the television series, Endgame is does not even come close to either of those. The villain was prissy and way too manic. He certainly did not seem like the bad ass killing machine he was supposed to be in this movie. Duncan's love interest is not at all interesting. Connor sleepwalks his way through the film. The flashbacks of Connor are terrible, he looks old and worn out. I know actors age but, couldn't they come up with some botox or at least better make-up for Christopher Lambert? The plot has more holes than a fishing net. Duncan kills his wife to activate her "immortality", no way! A bunch of rogue immortals forming a gang? Ridiculous. Why didn't this gang of idiots figure out that their power mad leader would kill them all to gain their quickening? There was way too much fighting and not enough decent dialogue. At the end, it was painfully obvious that Adrian Paul was standing in front of a computerized image of the highlands at Connor's grave. What cheap crap was that? The cameos of Joe and Methos (two of my favorite supporting characters in the tv series)were uninspired and unnecessary. This movie was a waste of my dollar, my time, and the efforts of the entire cast and crew.

It's 1994, and Conner MacLeod must battle Kane the Magician, who is a master illusionist seeking to rule the world. While searching for Kane, MacLeod meets Alex Smith, a research scientist from the Museum of Ancient History who is also on Kane's trail. They learn that Kane was buried beneath a mystical mountain over 300 years ago along with three other immortal warriors. With this knowledge, MacLeod returns to Scotland and rebuilds his old sword to prepare for his destiny. This was just as good as the first, almost better. I thought this was a very worthy sequel. Christopher Lambert is Highlander.

I read another review describing "Endgame" as a "complete waste of potential." That pretty well hits the nail on the head. The screenplay is badly written, and acting is all right in some places, sub-par in others. I was so disappointed, I threw the film away after one viewing.
